About This Item: This unisex necklace captures the spirit of the American West, featuring a genuine US coin in a green enamel bezel set on a rope chain. The coin is an Indian Head Penny minted from 1859 to 1909, securely mounted in a western-style bezel. The pendant hangs from a 24-inch steel rope chain with a 3-inch extender, closing with a lobster claw clasp.
The Indian Head Penny, composed of copper, was designed by James B. Longacre over 100 years ago. Legend has it that his daughter Sarah may have been the inspiration for the design, as she modeled a headdress given to the White House by a chief. However, Longacre himself once claimed that the design was inspired by Venus, a Greek statue. Initially designed to resemble laurel, the obverse was later changed to oak.
The Indian Head Penny was minted only in Philadelphia (with no mint mark) until production began at the San Francisco Mint in 1908.
